Ryoko Rain x Matsumoto Shave Ice

Some things you don't forget. Growing up, Matsumoto Shave Ice wasn't just a treat — it was a ritual. It was the kind of thing that felt exclusive to the island, something you had to travel for, something rooted in a history and tradition. That feeling stuck with me. So when the opportunity came for Ryoko Rain to collaborate with Matsumoto in 2023, it wasn't just a business decision; it was something personal.

The community responded in a way that reminded me why we do this. And when Remy Matsumoto and I started talking again, we both felt like there was more to say — more to celebrate. This year marks Matsumoto's 75th anniversary, and that's not something you let pass quietly. We've been working on something together for the past few months, building something intentional and worthy of that milestone. This collaboration is about more than two brands coming together. It's about honoring a legacy, bridging the mainland to the island, and giving the people who have loved Matsumoto from a distance a chance to experience that culture right here in person, in community, together. This one means a lot.

Sincerely,

FOR MORE INFORMATION ABOUT OUR JUNE 6th AND 7th EVENTS:

Ryoko Rain is bringing a taste of Hawaii to Southern California as the brand partners with the legendary Matsumoto Shave Ice to celebrate their 75th anniversary. In a two-day celebration of culture, flavor, and community, this partnership is creating something truly memorable.

On Saturday, June 6, Ryoko Rain will host a historic first: Matsumoto Shave Ice will be served on the mainland United States for the very first time. The activation will take place inside Ryoko Rain at the Irvine Spectrum Center during normal business hours and will feature a condensed menu of the iconic shaved ice offerings. Available while supplies last, this will be a limited and highly anticipated experience for all.

The celebration continues the following day, Sunday, June 7, at Tanaka Farms in Irvine with an immersive Luau Festival from 11:00 AM to 6:00 PM. This extended collaboration will showcase Matsumoto Shave Ice alongside a vibrant lineup of cultural activities and entertainment, including:

  • Fresh shaved ice served throughout the day
  • Exclusive collaboration merchandise
  • Live Polynesian dance performances and cultural entertainment by Mevina Liufau and Tavake Rereata Dance Studio
  • A curated selection of local food trucks
  • Cultural booths featuring hands-on experiences

Parking reservations are required and will be sold directly by Tanaka Farms, and attendees are encouraged to plan ahead.

The full clothing collection will be sold at Ryoko Rain in The Irvine Spectrum Center on June 6th and at Tanaka Farms on June 7th.

Two days. Two locations. One historic drop.

Ryoko Rain, Matsumoto Shave Ice, and Tanaka Farms are all buzzing fixtures in the Japanese-American community whose aspirations brought them from humble beginnings to global names. Built on passion, identity, and a desire to create something meaningful, their stories are bridging generations and creating moments where traditions are experienced, not just remembered.

A portion of net proceeds from Luau Festival will be donated to farmers in Hawaii devastated by the floods.

We are honored to be a part of this monumental moment. Come join us, everyone is welcome.
